Atlanta Raises Over $230K at Annual Power of 10 Event
On October 30, 2013, nearly 200 guests joined Posse Atlanta at the stunning Mandarin Oriental for the annual Power of 10 fundraiser. The festive evening honored Misty Skedgell of Turner Broadcasting System, featured music by Unknown Lyric, and included remarks from Posse alumna Jasmine Verreen.
One of Posse Atlanta’s earliest supporters, Turner Broadcasting System has been an invaluable partner, sponsoring events and providing career development and internship opportunities for Scholars. Honoree Misty Skedgell, Turner’s senior vice president of corporate communications, was drawn to Posse’s cohort model and the way Scholars support each other through college and beyond.
“Posse Scholars make the most of every opportunity they are presented,” said Misty, who also remarked that the Posse model is reflective of her own “posse” of family, friends and mentors.
During the evening's program Jasmine, a cum laude graduate of The College of Wooster, shared how her Posse helped her achieve the dream of being a college graduate, comparing the experience to the poem “The Rose that Grew from Concrete.”
"I constantly remind myself that roses grow from concrete when a community of people decide to care and nurture those roses," said Jasmine, who is currently a Teach For America corps member in Miami, Florida.
Phil Pead, chair of the Posse Atlanta Advisory Board, concluded the evening with a challenge to raise additional dollars to support Posse. Phil pledged a gift of $50,000, leading guests to follow suit and contribute an additional $48,000. This year’s Power of 10 raised more than $230,000 to support Posse Atlanta.
