Boston Alumni Demonstrate Growth, Impact of Posse
Posse alumni Alvaro Peters, a 2014 graduate of Union College, and Kency Theork, a 2004 graduate of Bowdoin College, represent the breadth of Posse’s impact in Boston over the last 15 years.
Alvaro, who had an interdepartmental major in history and Africana studies, returned to Boston after graduation as a member of City Year, an Americorps program that places young adults in urban public schools to help support students and teachers through tutoring, mentoring and after-school programming. Alvaro works with students at the Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Boston. During college, he spent a summer interning at Breakthrough Collaborative in Cambridge, where he taught two middle school classes and helped to increase academic opportunities for highly motivated, underserved students.
“Now that I’m a member of the ‘real world,’ with my college education at my back, I’m ready to make changes,” says Alvaro. “I feel prepared to change this city and my community for the better, one student at a time.”
Kency Theork, a member of Posse Boston’s very first Posse, emigrated from Haiti as a high school student and greatly valued the support of his Posse on campus. Today, Kency is an officer with State Street Global Services and recently earned his M.B.A. from Boston University.
“Things were a little different at Posse Boston in 1999,” says Kency. “We recruited only 10 Scholars, but we had what was most important for a Posse office—we had a dream of college access, college completion, and the creation of a movement for change here in Boston.”
With more than 350 alumni, Posse Boston is excited to see how these bright, talented professionals continue to give back to the community and transform the workforce in Boston and beyond.
