Carleton Alum Shapes Local Policy as Houston City Analyst
Cristina Camarillo, a 2023 Carleton College graduate, is making a meaningful impact as a policy analyst for the City of Houston. In her role, she supports Council Member Joaquin Martinez by researching, drafting and reviewing policy proposals and council agenda items.
“My work helps Council member Martinez make more informed decisions, ensuring that city funds are spent wisely and that we are meeting the needs of the community,” she explains.
Cristina’s passion for public service began in high school, where she was actively involved in local government and voter outreach. “I realized how much local policies directly affect daily life—decisions about water bills, trash collection, sidewalks and more.” she notes.
Looking back on my college experience, I can’t imagine how I would have done it without Posse.
Her commitment led her to an internship in 2022 with Council Member Tarsha Jackson, further igniting her desire to effect change.
After receiving a follow-up thank-you call from a constituent, she understood the profound impact of her work. “I’m continually surprised by the power of local government and how much it can shape our community,” she says.
Cristina credits The Posse Foundation with being an invaluable part of her journey.
“Posse provided me with a great support system – my Posse members, advisors, and trainers were crucial to my success,” she says. “Looking back on my college experience, I can’t imagine how I would have done it without Posse. The organization helped me gain confidence and connect with the right people.”
The Posse network continues to be a vital resource as she navigates her career. “We are all so diverse in our backgrounds and professions, and that’s inspiring. Posse gave me a push in the right direction,” she reflects.
With her dedication to public service and community empowerment, Cristina Camarillo strives to make a lasting impact in Houston.
“No matter where my career takes me, I hope to continue helping people and seeing the direct results of my work.”
