Dartmouth Posse Veterans Alum Heads to Harvard Law
Brad Carney, a Dartmouth College graduate of the Posse Veterans Program, begins his studies at Harvard Law School this fall. He points to Posse as a vital motivating factor behind his undergraduate success and goals for the future.
Brad still vividly recalls the moment he was selected for Posse, more than five years ago.
“I was boarding the plane heading home from the finalist interview and I got the call,” he remembers. “I wanted to yell and tell everyone on the plane, I was so excited. I stood there shaking.”
Brad points to Posse as a vital motivating factor behind his undergraduate success and goals for the future.
Brad was committed to make the most of his time as an undergraduate at Dartmouth from the moment he stepped foot on campus. Beyond his strong focus on academics, he emerged as a leader in the campus chapter of Student Veterans of America, creating fresh momentum by rallying peers to maintain a nearby nature path dedicated to veterans. The project built camaraderie in the student organization and led to increased member activity.
When considering future career applications for his law degree, Brad finds himself inspired by his Posse experience.
“I am passionate about higher education,” he says. “How to help people access it, how to make it better, how to look at it and ask the big questions: Are we doing this right?”
As an alumnus of the Posse Veterans Program, Brad is already giving back to the community. He has volunteered with fellow graduates to help build the Posse Veterans alumni network, and supports recruitment efforts by encouraging more veterans to apply.
“You can look to people who’ve been through what you’ve been through,” Brad says, reflecting on the power of Posse’s cohort model for student veterans. ”You know if you’re giving it your all or not. That’s the great part of having smart, driven people around you that you can talk to every day.”
