F&M STEM Scholar Prepares to Be Doctor

Motivated by her experiences in communities where people lack access to healthcare, Franklin & Marshall College STEM Scholar Tomilya Simmons is serious about becoming a doctor. A junior studying biochemistry and molecular biology, she is a dedicated student and actively immersed in the campus science community.

In addition to keeping up with demanding academic course load, Tomilya is a teaching assistant in the biology department, a lab assistant in the chemistry department, and a student office assistant for the anthropology department.

“I am excited about all of the opportunities I have at Franklin & Marshall College,” says Tomilya. “These experiences will prepare me to be a doctor in the future.”

Tomilya discovered as a high school student that mentoring younger students was enriching and fueled her drive to serve her community as a doctor. Now, as a member of the executive board of the Pre-Med Honor Society, she helps provide underclassmen with resources for community service.

Last summer, Tomilya participated in the Medical and Dental Educational Program at University of Virginia School of Medicine. Her understanding of the medical field was enriched as she gained clinical exposure, observed physician seminars, and participated in lectures on cutting-edge topics in the health sector.
