Hamilton Alumna Headed to Harvard Law
Denise Ghartey, a 2012 graduate of Hamilton College, was awarded a full scholarship to attend Harvard Law School. Currently a paralegal with two different organizations, Denise is a homelessness prevention advocate and advises the homeless and nearly homeless in all aspects of their housing searches.
“Knowledge is power,” Denise says. “That plays an integral role in my life as an advocate for those who are socially disadvantaged, and it has long been the impetus of my desire to study law.”
Recognized for excellence throughout her academic career at Hamilton, Denise was named a Kirkland College Scholar for her commitment to women's issues and received the Harris Prize for demonstrating superior scholarship in the field of philosophy.
In addition, Denise was awarded Hamilton’s prestigious Bristol Fellowship to live and study outside the United States for one year. Her project—Nowhere and Everywhere: A Cross Cultural Exploration of How Young People Create Their Identities—examined the cultural practices and the ideological construction of identities within multicultural families, communities and young people.
“My activities as a Posse Scholar, my community outreach efforts, and my work as a Bristol Fellow all enabled me to develop the language and skills necessary to address critical issues that continue to affect poor people of color,” says Denise.
