Hamilton Scholar Wins Grant to Study Cuban Culture in U.S.

Hamilton College Scholar Gabriella “Gaby” Pico, a junior, is studying public policy, minoring in French and Spanish, and considering attending law school after graduating from college. She received Hamilton’s Kirkland Scholars Award for her “commitment to the needs and interests of women” after being nominated by her professors.

With support from Hamilton’s Emerson Foundation Grant, Gaby spent the summer researching the economic, social, and political ideology that has shaped the Cuban women in enclave communities in the United States. Her interest in this research stems from her experience as a child of Cuban immigrants and strong identification with the Cuban culture.

During the academic year, Gaby serves on the executive board for Sidekicks, a mentoring program which pairs Hamilton first-year students with local elementary students to encourage academic growth and fosters a connection between the campus and town.

“Hamilton has taught me the value of a small community—something I never experienced coming from a large city,” says Gaby. “Professors, students, and faculty create an environment where I feel comfortable being myself, asking for help when I need it, and feeling at home.”
