Lafayette Alumna Becomes Assistant District Attorney

As a first-generation college student, Posse alumna Laquan Lightfoot was determined to make the most of her higher education and serve her community. A graduate of Lafayette College and Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law, she joins the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office this fall as an assistant district attorney.

“Being a Posse Scholar is a badge of honor I am humbly proud to wear,” Laquan says. "The values Posse instilled, the dreams it helped me attain, and the faith Posse has in me, motivate me to maintain a spirit of excellence and purpose while helping others do the same.”

As a Scholar at Lafayette, Laquan held leadership positions in student government, mock trial and the Association of Black Collegians. On the mock trial team, she first discovered her passion for law and received two prestigious awards in regional competitions: the All Regional Attorney Award and the All Regional Witness Award.

An undergraduate internship in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office strengthened Laquan’s conviction to become a lawyer and she received a full-tuition merit scholarship from Drexel. While in law school, she volunteered with the domestic violence unit of the Philadelphia Family Court, was certified as a legal intern by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and served as the regional mock trial director for the Mid-Atlantic Black Law Students Association.

“Receiving an offer to join the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office was such an amazing moment for me," says Laquan. "I know that Posse is creating a pipeline of future attorneys who will share that experience.”
