Northwestern Scholar Leads Workshops Promoting Social Justice, Inclusion

Spring 2023 | Los Angeles

Northwestern University Scholar Maya Turun is a first-year social policy major working as a student facilitator with the Peer Inclusion Educators (PIE) program.

The program is dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment through workshops on social justice topics. She, along with her peers, hosts sessions with local organizations, Greek life, and many other student organizations on issues surrounding social identity, power, privilege, oppression, and social justice. “I knew I wanted to be involved in public service work since high school," says Maya. "I believe what you put out into the world you receive.”

"I believe what you put out into the world you receive.”

One of her most recent facilitation experiences involved working with an organization that tutors at local prisons. During this workshop, she led activities and facilitated conversations on saviorism and equity when it comes to entering reformative spaces.

“Maya hit the ground running right at the start of college and is taking advantage of so many great opportunities,” says Posse Los Angeles Director Nikki Kealalio. "Her leadership and involvement on-campus and her drive to push social change is inspiring."

Outside of being a student facilitator, Maya is also involved with the Northwestern Philanthropic Council and the Grounding for Public Service club. Maya hopes to build a career in public service and continue to give back to her community.
