Posse Houston Celebrates First Anniversary
Over 100 guests gathered at the Posse Houston office in April to mark the chapter’s first anniversary. Thanks to the city of Houston’s strong philanthropic community and the support of its diverse school district, the successful first year of recruitment resulted in 585 nominations for 30 Posse Scholarships.
The new Houston Scholars are currently sharpening their
leadership skills in Posse’s Pre-Collegiate Training Program and will
matriculate at Bryn Mawr College, Texas A&M University and The University
of Texas at Austin in the fall. In the coming year, Posse Houston will recruit
the next cohorts for those institutions as well as for newly added partners
Carleton College and Colby College.
“These Scholars join a network of talented men and women who will become our
country’s leadership in years to come,” said Posse President and Founder
Deborah Bial during her welcoming remarks alongside Board Chair Jeff Ubben.
Many Scholars shared their stories with the crowd, conveying the significance
of the Scholarship. One Scholar relayed going on a four-mile run to ease the
excitement after receiving the call informing him he had won the Posse
Scholarship. Another noted the importance of having consistency in his
education and the immense value of his peer group. And another spoke about her
responsibility to be a role model as a first-generation college student.
“We are so excited for Posse Houston Scholars to arrive on campus,” says Kamari J. Brewer, the director of Posse Houston. “They are eager to delve into their college careers while supporting each other and contributing to the campus community.”
