Power of 10 Event Raises $190K

Winter 2014 | D.C.

On October 9, Posse D.C. hosted its sixth annual Power of 10 fundraiser at The Hamilton Live in Washington, D.C. The event raised more than $190,000 and more than 200 people attended, including leaders from the local corporate, civic, education and philanthropic communities. Michele Hagans, the president and CEO of Fort Lincoln New Town Corporation, was honored for her commitment to excellence in higher education and investment in community development.

“The Power of 10 was wildly successful due in great measure to our dynamic honoree, Michele Hagans, and Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial,\" says Posse D.C. Director Tamara Wilds Lawson. “Both women emphasized the impact Posse D.C. has made and stressed how generous supporters, many of whom were present that evening, were helping change lives.”

This annual event is held to recognize the strength of Posse’s dynamic Scholars and celebrate diversity, equity and leadership in higher education and the workforce. During the evening’s program, Theodosia Goddard, a member of the Posse National Alumni Advisory Council and graduate of Sewanee: The University of the South, led fellow alumni in a discussion about Posse’s impact on their lives. Anika Manzoor and David Opong-Wadee, both graduates of Grinnell College, Lafayette College alumnus Ross Tilchin and Bucknell University alumna Jasmine Niernberger offered their powerful perspectives.

“As a Scholar you are constantly reminded to take advantage of resources,” said Anika, who recently received a Fulbright Scholarship. “You can count on someone asking, ‘What else is out there for you?’”

“We were always encouraged to take initiative as Posse Scholars,” said Ross, who served in many leadership roles on Lafayette’s campus. “That has benefitted me immensely following graduation.”

A silent auction made possible by Hilton Worldwide generated exciting bidding for a five-night stay at a Hilton hotel anywhere in the world. One lucky guest took home the generous prize and proceeds from the auction will benefit Posse’s programming for current and future Scholars.

Posse D.C. is extremely grateful to the sponsors and supporters whose generosity opens doors of access to educational and professional opportunities for Posse Scholars.
