Scholar Combines Engineering, Business for a Career in Fashion
Dajah Massey, a Scholar at Bucknell University, was selected to be on the spring 2014 cover of Be Fashion, Bucknell’s student-run fashion magazine. With a double major in business management and civil and environmental engineering, Dajah is one year away from completing a rigorous five-year undergraduate program.
Dajah hopes to run a fashion business that creates eco-conscious, sustainable clothing accessible to mass consumers. Her civil engineering coursework has helped her implement unique problem solving techniques using mathematical measurements and an eye for detail, her business management knowledge has been useful for cost value analysis of her designs, and studying abroad in London helped her gain a global perspective on both engineering and fashion. In addition, Dajah is preparing for her career with a leadership position in the National Society of Black Engineers.
“I want the major stores we shop from to be filled with clothes with a conscious background so that people don’t have to make an effort or investment to make a sustainable choice,” says Dajah.
The civic engagement component of Posse’s partnership with Bucknell has helped fuel Dajah’s passion for the environment and her goal for increased sustainability to benefit future generations.
“Posse has surrounded me with a support system that includes a mentor who is also a minority female in engineering,” says Dajah. “Her example shows me I can make it in a field that statistics tells me I can’t.”
