Scholar Named Newman Civic Fellow at HWS Colleges

Spring 2018 | Los Angeles

Since arriving at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS), Posse Scholar Brandy Vargas has made an impact both on campus and in the surrounding area. She was recently awarded 2018’s prestigious Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellowship for impressive work she’s done to address challenges facing the extended community in Geneva, New York.

The fellowship provides training and resources to help Brandy and other awardees develop strategies to build on their passions and achieve social change. Brandy is pursuing a double major in American and educational studies with a concentration in leadership and organizational studies and is a campus resident advisor. She is currently working as a research assistant with Associate Professor of American Studies Elizabeth Belanger for a project investigating the history and ethnic culture of Geneva.

After first compiling information and interviews, the team will develop a curriculum to teach the local history of Geneva to middle-school students. The area boasts a rich culture of social justice and activism that Brandy is excited to tap into and disseminate to the community.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a gateway to expand my network of support.

“Brandy has impressed me not only with her Posse Scholarship but with her commitment to social justice,” says Professor Belanger. “Her work in my service learning courses really sets her apart. The diligence, creativity, and maturity with which she approaches community partners fosters authentic, reciprocal relationships between the colleges and the city.”

Brandy additionally serves the community through her work as a direct support professional at Lochland School, where she assists residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“I’ve been especially impressed with Brandy’s ability to acclimate to our upstate New York campus and extended community,” says HWS President Gregory J. Vincent, noting her commitment to social justice and particular interest in local outreach.

“Being awarded the Newman Civic Fellowship is an extraordinary opportunity,” says Brandy. “It is a gateway to expand my network of support, helping me grow socially and academically while continuing my civic engagement.”
