Seventh Annual Power of 10 Event Celebrates Posse's Decade in D.C.
In October 2014, Posse D.C. hosted its seventh annual Power of 10 fundraiser at The Hamilton Live in Washington, D.C. The event raised nearly $200,000 and more than 225 guests were in attendance, including leaders from the local corporate, civic, education and philanthropic communities. The evening honored The Posse Foundation’s impact in D.C. over the past decade and featured remarks by General Colin L. Powell, the former United States secretary of state and a dedicated advocate for American youth.
“In addition to General Powell, it was an honor to have Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial with us that evening to celebrate Posse’s 25th anniversary nationally and commemorate 10 years of local impact,” says Posse D.C. Director Tamara Wilds Lawson.
This annual event is held to recognize the strength of Posse’s dynamic Scholars and celebrate diversity, equity and leadership in higher education and the workforce. During the evening’s program, Laquan Lightfoot, a graduate of Lafayette College and the event's featured alumna speaker, shared with attendees Posse’s impact on her life.
“Being a Posse Scholar gave me the courage I needed to accept any challenges and the knowledge and resources to make my successes possible,” said Laquan, who joined the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office this fall as an assistant district attorney. “Posse enabled me to generate discussions, groups, events and safe spaces to foster an atmosphere needed to cultivate diversity and sustain its growth.”
A silent auction made possible by Hilton Worldwide generated exciting bidding for a five-night stay at a Hilton hotel anywhere in the world. One lucky guest took home the generous prize and proceeds from the auction will benefit Posse’s programming for current and future Scholars.
Posse D.C. is extremely thankful to the sponsors and supporters whose generosity opens doors of access to educational and professional opportunities for Posse Scholars.
