Sewanee Alumnus Joins U.S. Department of State

Fasion Maxwell, an alumnus of Sewanee: The University of the South, is an inbound and domestic transportation counselor with the United States Department of State in Washington, D.C. He facilitates the travel and transportation of government and military personnel as well as global ambassadors.

With a degree in international and global studies, Fasion is excited about the exposure his role with the State Department will provide to international affairs. Eventually, he aspires to serve as an advocate for the foster care and child welfare systems, both domestically and internationally.

Previously, Fasion worked with D.C.’s Child and Family Services Agency where, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Transportation, he created a career readiness program offering professional skills training for youth in foster care.

“I had to learn to manage a large workload and serve as the liaison between various agencies,” Fasion says. “I grew up in the foster care system, so I wanted to give back to children who walked in the same light and provide them with the skills needed to successfully transition out of foster care into secondary school or vocational opportunities.”

The roles Fasion held on campus at Sewanee—president of the Gamma Sigma Phi Fraternity and a member of the African American Alliance—and the internship experience he had with The Child and Family Services Agency allowed him to develop his intrinsic leadership abilities.

“I would not have graduated or considered pursuing this professional journey without Posse” says Fasion. “The unwavering support from my Posse, on-campus mentor and Posse staff gave me the confidence to believe I can do great things.”
