Telemundo EVP Advances Multiculturalism
New York City native Peter E. Blacker’s passion for Spanish language set the stage for a career in media serving Latin and Hispanic communities. As executive vice president of digital media and emerging business for NBCUniversal’s Telemundo Media, he has blazed a trail in multicultural media.
“I’ve dedicated almost all of my career to an understanding and advancement of multiculturalism,” says Peter. “I’ve had one foot in the traditional corporate boardroom and also a deep understanding of the multicultural marketplace. I could be a bridge between the two because it was the right thing to do and the smart thing to do from a business perspective.”
A graduate of the prestigious Trinity School, Peter earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. He began his career in Miami, one of the only cities in the United States at the time where he felt he could use Spanish full time, before moving to Brazil—and adding Portuguese to his language roster—to launch an internet company targeted to Latin Americans. His success there led to a position with Time Warner where he helped launch AOL Latino before joining Telemundo in 2005. Under his leadership, Telemundo has become a digital media powerhouse.
When his neighbor Joanna Grover-Watson, a Posse Miami Advisory Board member, introduced Peter to The Posse Foundation, he connected immediately with the Foundation’s mission. He joined the advisory board and was appointed chair last year
“Miami is the city of the future,” Peter says. “It’s such a multicultural mixing pot, a vibrant and dynamic city that’s going through so much change. With Posse deeply entrenched here, we have a real opportunity to have an impact on the growth and maturity of the city. The captains of industry here in Miami are very diverse and I want to make sure we’re able to showcase that leadership to other Posse students.”
“Peter brings tremendous energy to Posse,” says Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial. “His expertise in marketing and media has already influenced Posse’s ability to better reach and connect with Scholars, alumni and the public through social media and creative branding.\"
