Texas A&M Scholar Studies Aerospace Engineering, Serves Campus Community

Winter 2022 | Houston

Vincent Guerrero, a Texas A&M University Posse Scholar, has continued to raise the bar of excellence as he pursues leadership roles inside and outside of the classroom.

Arriving on campus this fall was exciting for the first-year, an aspiring aerospace engineering major. Despite being a first-generation college student, Vincent says he had heard many stories about Texas A&M from family friends and was looking forward to beginning his time as an Aggie.

When he’s not in the classroom, Vincent works part-time at the campus ticketing office. He is involved with the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and has already been elected to attend the national SHPE convention in Florida as a freshman representative.

“It’s good to have people to count on that know you and are willing to help.”

Vincent also serves on SHPE sub-committees: SHPETINA, which supports Latina women in STEM; Technical Affairs, which improves technical literacy and tutors incoming freshman in calculus and Python coding; and the President’s Committee, which seeks to teach leadership and communication skills.

Beyond the Texas A&M campus, Vincent also serves the community with SHPE, teaching STEM subjects to elementary and middle school students in the Bryan and College Station region. These programs have been particularly memorable for Vincent, and he recalls with excitement a hands-on rollercoaster activity he used to teach the young students kinetic and potential energy.

“Without my Posse, I would feel much more alone than I am because the college is so big and it’s so easy to get lost,” Vincent says. “It’s good to have people to count on that know you and are willing to help.”

When asked about his long-term goals, Vincent expressed a passion for giving back to his home community. He already hopes to engage with his former high school in Houston, working to better prepare students for careers in engineering. As for the rest of his time at Texas A&M, Vincent aims to get involved with more organizations, and wants to eventually serve as a mentor for first-generation students in STEM.
