Ubben Ends Successful Tenure as Board Chair
ValueAct CEO Jeff Ubben is stepping down as chair of The Posse Foundation’s national board of directors after nearly 10 years of exemplary leadership. During his tenure, the Foundation greatly expanded both its fundraising capacity and programmatic reach.
“During my day job as an investor, I seek those rare opportunities in which great management teams execute on a focused mission that delivers high value to all of its constituencies,” says Jeff. “It was clear from the beginning that The Posse Foundation justified my investment. And it continues to flourish, fulfilling its goals of stretching the definition of merit among college-bound public school students, of opening lines of communication on campus, and of shaking up the leadership ranks in the workforce.”
“Jeff’s contributions to Posse feel immeasurable,” says Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial. “His commitment to ensuring Posse’s growth and to securing its future allows thousands of Scholars and alumni access to the best academic and professional opportunities that this country has to offer. We have been lucky to have him at helm of the board for the past 10 years and we are so grateful for the indelible impact of his leadership.”
Jeff joined the Posse board in 2005 and became national board chair in 2007. Under his leadership, Posse opened four new chapters, added 47 college and university partnerships, and launched specialized initiatives to serve U.S. veterans and students majoring in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields.
“I am thankful for all of you who also see Posse as a great investment of your time and money.”

In addition, Jeff supported successful fundraising initiatives to keep pace with Posse’s budget as it serves a growing number of students annually. To commemorate Posse’s 25th anniversary in 2014, Jeff and his father, Posse board member Tim Ubben, each pledged to bring their lifetime giving to $25 million. Together their gifts will more than double the size of Posse’s endowment and help guarantee Posse’s existence well into the future.
Jeff is a founder of ValueAct Capital, a leading investment firm with offices in San Francisco and Boston that manages more than $16 billion on behalf of institutional and individual investors. He has a B.A. from Duke University and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and today serves on the board of trustees of both institutions.
“I am thankful for all of you who also see Posse as a great investment of your time and money,” says Jeff. “And I will continue to marvel at how much we, together with Debbie and her team, can change the country, one student leader at a time.”
